Alright- well please please vote for me in the Fleshbot Reader’s Choice awards! I will love you forever.
I’m going to be honest with you. This is kind of embarrassing. Sometimes I am just not sure how honest I should be with you all.
A few hours ago I was actually not included on the list of people here. I emailed the Fleshbot staff with a bunch of sad faces that looked like this =( and then they threw me on there- even though the truth of the matter is that I did not have an overwhelming amount of people write in and request that I be on the list. It’s cool. It happens sometimes.They added me on anyways because Fleshbot is awesome and they had a feeling that once I was on there my army would come and vote for me. Maybe my fans were too busy looking at BurningAngel porn to take a break and email my name into Fleshbot- yeah! That must have been it!
Let me tell you- it really is hard to be a “famous” porn star and only work for yourself- when yourself is still in the scene of things- a very small company. I used to work for other people- in the past few years I stopped (with the exception of a few random scenes- I have done 4 scenes for other production companies in the past 3 years). I just felt like it didn’t make any sense- my name is Joanna Angel… um… I should really just be on BurningAngel! This might sound very dorky business woman-ish but it was just not good branding to be the punk princess of porn and then appear in very um… not so punk porno movies. I would also rather be working on promoting my own company and making it bigger and better rather than spending time on someone else’s set.
Sometimes I feel a little guilty that much of my blog entries are shameless self promotional plugs- but being able to show the world that I can get the same awards as the other girls who have been in hundreds and hundreds of “mainstream” porn releases in movies that sell a lot more copies than mine do, really is a great achievement for me- and my company, and for you know…. just the general image of women and porn and blah blah blah. I want to be able to keep making what we make- and make more of it, and make it better and better…. and this is just part of the game I have to play to get there. I hope you understand. I wanna stand on stage and accept awards for being in movies like LA Pink, or POV Punx…. or Friends don’t Let Friends fuck alone…. not… you know… Pirates, or like, super school girl sluts # 22 (I don’t know if that is actually a movie but I am assuming it is). I have nothing against people who have chose that path – it is just not the path I want to take.
So I am totally sorry if this was some long winded emo rant. I don’t like to show this side of myself. But even if you don’t like me, and you like the other scenes with other girls on BurningAngel- please show your support!
Hopefully I will have the balls to keep this entry up and I won’t take it down in a few days.

I’d like to share the story about how I learned about Joanna Angel and Burning Angel that might provide some perspective into the value of mainstream appearances. I hope I don’t overly flatter you or offend you; my intent is to share how you converted me into a fan.
First, some background. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I moved upstate to the capital area of NY for college and have lived here ever since (a loooong time). In this college town, there is really only 1 store that sells adult films that range many studios and genres. Also, tattoos are just starting to become popular here. It’s not really my thing, but whatever. Couple all these things together, and you can understand how I had never heard about Joanna and Burning Angel until this summer.
I started using twitter in the spring, and started to notice that a lot of the people I was meeting were following Joanna. So I started following Joanna. In my following, I started to hear about many of the things she was working on, but I still didn’t know what she did or why she was popular. So I did some research, and looked into getting a movie with her. Being that I am also a fan of Sasha Grey, I was hearing lots of stuff about one called “I want to F*ck Your Sister,” so I picked it up. I thought it was hilarious. I thought the scene with the two of them and James Deen was hilarious, because it starts out, and here’s Joanna (an obviously Jewish and Proud-to-be-so girl) running out of ingredients for “Jewish Wedding Soup” (something I’m still not sure is even real) so she runs out to the store only to have Sasha (her “sister”) steal her man. A couple of other plot twists happen, and it was just a brilliant scene.
I was kind of taken away with how Joanna was able to have fun with it and show some personality. This continued throughout my following of her on twitter. I also started following James Deen, and at some point over the summer, they started hyping the making of the newest BA dvd (LA Pink) release, and I got curious, so followed closer and did some research.
I decided I was going to buy it, not because I was into girls w tats, but more because it was something I followed and saw unfold on twitter. I purchased it and received it last week. We just finihed watching it and it’s great. There’s actually a plot, and the same personality I mentioned above was obvious in the writing and delivery.
Had it not been for the mainstream release above and twitter, I wouldn’t have gotten exposed to Joanna and Burning angel. I think that it’s clear that she has built a great company that makes entertaining films. While I think it’s important to be exclusive to Burning Angel, I also think that there is some value in doing the mainstream releases that would be lost by refusing to do so. If you can keep it to titles/studios/directors whose creative interests match yours, then it’s something that can continue to be beneficial to gaining even more exposure/revenue.

thank you- that was an interesting point. it’s always good to hear how people heard about me. it’s hard to know how much I should do or not do- ideally my company would be big enough so you would have heard of my releases first, before the mainstream ones…. but obviously I am not at that point yet.

I think that in Joanna Angel’s case what is most appealing in terms of her body of work is that there is one comes away with a very tangible sense of sincerity and dedication-that is, the movies that are being produced are not merely “by the numbers”, “going through the motions” commodities which are being sold as though they were cans of beans if you’ll forgive the expression. In every release you get this sense that everybody is legitimately enjoying themselves (after all sex is the best fun people can have without laughing) and not viewing it purely as a revenue making exercise, watching the clock and cashing in the pay-cheque in a manner of speaking.
Granted porn is a business like any other, it is always endearing to see people involved in it who while always being cognizant of the proverbial “bottom line”, still put in vast amounts of time, energy, passion and ahem, sweat. One could liken it to the music business by analogy-initially when people are younger they are entranced by whatever is “popular” and that serves as the catalyst to delve deeper into other genres etc.-case in point: I love death metal but initially many eons ago liked the so-called “popular bands”, naturally my tastes have evolved but these were impetus to explore. By extension, as the above poster has so rightly pointed out, the “mainstream” in porn is good insofar as providing a platform to delve further into niches and find performers who subscribe to a certain aesthetic, creative standpoint or “vibe” we can identify with.
For my part I honestly can’t remember how I found out about Joanna Angel and her work-it was back in the halcyon days of 2006 and although the “punk” aesthetic is not my thing in the strictest sense per se, I have always respected her commitment to staying true to her artistic vision and not compromising for the sake of greater financial gain at the expense of integrity. Well that and the admittedly typically male reasons for watching said films; something about being in the middle of two or more women resonates with my primordial cave-man sense.
That said, forgive the dissertation-but my overriding sentiment is that all in all it’d be nice to see Joanna go on to bigger and better things and be at least the foremost of the “independent” companies out there, if not “kicking more goals” for the humble, true-to-themselves and their fans pornographer.

I have already complained to my local adult book store that there is no reason why they carry no films by Burning Angel. Until they start doing so, I’ll keep bringing my Burning Angel stickers to shows and trying to spread the word how I can. I’m getting people to look with twitter, but I’m only a wee little voice on there.

I liked your post and glad you decided to leave it up. It shows you’re real – which is apparent when you Tweet – this just reinforces that. What you said rang true for any profession. Stay true to yourself and do what you love.
I follow a lot of porn stars on Twitter and they pump their movies/sites/appearances hard. So hard that I’ve unfollowed many of them. I never feel like you’re over doing it or “shamelessly promoting” yourself. I like knowing what you’re working on and it never feels like promotion. Just a girl talking about her day at work. Just so happens your work involves sex.
I voted for you and hope you win. You’re a small voice being heard in a big world. We need more women like you to represent. Good luck!
