FYF Fest!

This past Saturday I FINALLY got to see Refused play. Refused are one of my all time favorite bands and I missed their reunion shows as of late. It was like someone was trying to fuck with me;  I would be in New York and the day I had to leave Refused would play New York, or the few times they played LA I happened to be out of town. It was as if Refused’s booking agent looked at my appearance schedule and made sure to book all their reunion dates in cities I was nowhere near!

So, Refused were headlining a festival in Los Angeles called FYF Fest. A whole bunch of bands I liked played the festival which is rad, but, I am old and don’t  have the patience to watch that many bands in one day, so, I saved most of my band watching energy for Refused. I did see some of Hot Snakes set, they were pretty good. I love Hot Snakes and they played well, they just didn’t have much energy on stage. Then, I watched Sleigh Bells who were pretty good. I think the singer wants to be the next Karen O, or maybe she alreadyis the next Karen O. Karen O is not nearly as reckless as she used to be and she needs a hot chick who yells a lot to take her place. Next, I watched M83, who were pretty good. I get kinda bored watching electronic bands play. I don’t know what it is. I dig watching full bands play, I guess I’m just punk! I do enjoy listening to M83, but I think you need to be on some kind of hallucinogenic drug to truly be blown away by their performance.

So, Refused were fucking perfect! It was literally the best live performance I have ever seen in my life. I am not kidding! I have seen most of the famous front-men (and women) perform,  like Morrissey, and The Cure, Madonna, even Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson… and I swear, no one comes close to Dennis Lyxzen. He gives 100% energy the entire time and the rest of the band played flawlessly.

I am so glad I was able to experience all this with some of my favorite people! Dana Dearmond, Jessie Lee, Josie Jacobs and Phoenix Askani came along with me. We all watched the show on the stage!

I met Dennis several years ago when I interviewed the International Noise Conspiracy for Burning Angel and we stayed in touch since!  He’s a sweetheart and is probably the sexiest man in Sweden and the best microphone thrower/ twirler on the planet.

And then backstage when I was lurking around I spotted a legend, J Mascis! I didn’t watch Dinosaur Jr play FYF fest but I have seen them when I was younger,  they’re basically the soundtrack to my life sophomore year of college.

After the show I ate a whole bunch of greasy diner food with Dennis and another member of Refused whose name I can’t remember for the life of me and I feel like a total asshole because of it. I’m sorry dude!

Handsome and talented Swedish people + Porn Stars = a very good late night meal.

As this flier states, next weekend is CHICAGO EXXXOTICA and there will be a BurningAngel booth there! Signing at this booth – and featured as little pepperoni slices on this deep dish pizza, clockwise from ME – are….KLEIO, SIDNEY SCARLET, PAIGE, RIZZO, PHOENIX ASKANI and FELIX!  And of course, I will be there too! =)

P.S. Lots of people were offended by my Butt Flag picture on the 4th. I’m sorry – I didn’t mean to offend anyone and it wasn’t even modeled after a real American flag (there weren’t even 50 butts in place of 50 stars – only, like, 38!!!). On that note, I really hope that this image does not offend anyone. I love all pizza equally and would fight violently to defend the honor of deep dish pizza!  This was in no way an attempt to desecrate Chicago’s deep dish pizza. Thank you.

Well, as I had told you before – I went to Mayhem Fest this weekend. It was a big metal show, and I got to see Slayer for the first time ever. It was incredible. There was fire on stage, and bass cabinets lined up like inverted crosses. They didn’t wear costumes, they didn’t blab on about any nonsense, they didn’t have a ton of makeup on – they just got on the stage, played their songs, and walked off. It was like, they had nothing to prove. They are fucking Slayer.

I wasn’t cool enough to see them when I was younger. Being able to watch “Raining Blood” played live was a moment I will never forget!

I went there with Jessie Lee and Phoenix, along with one of Jessie’s friends named Kate – who has like, the same hair as Jessie. I also ran into Andy San Dimas while I was there. Together we all got drunk and watched metal, and it was a great way to spend a Saturday.

I was too short to watch Anthrax so my friend Matt put me on his shoulders, and I clearly got to see the whole thing. It’s awesome being a very small girl with some big friends.

Slipknot was the headlining band, and I wasn’t sure why. I think some of their songs are OK and all, but I don’t think they are gods; I don’t know why they have three drummers and like, an entire circus on stage with them, and I don’t know why they headlined over Slayer. It was a little confusing to me, but the place was completely packed when they played. I guess I am alone in my confusion about the greatness of Slipknot.

I got to meet a lot of fans while I was there. It’s nice to know I have fans who listen to good music! I am going to see if I can go to any of the other Mayhem Fests in different cities. It’s a really awesome tour.

Well everyone have a happy Fourth of July. Eat some hot dogs, or veggie hot dogs…watch some fireworks, sleep late and think about America.

You know, I was in a total slump… and going to the Warped Tour yesterday with Phoenix and Jessie Lee totally cheered me up. I don’t care if I am 31 years old… I think I’ll be going to Warped tour till I die. I have basically been there every year for the past … I don’t know, maybe 10 years?

I woke up and got unnecessarily depressed yesterday morning. For some reason, I really dislike holidays. It’s too much pressure to do something fun – and I feel like society tries to make you feel like shit if you don’t have your average American life – or the one you see on TV. You know, like a husband, kids, a BBQ, a house, lots of friends , etc. I don’t know. Why do I even care about what is “normal”? I am not really sure. I should probably stop watching TV or something.

After a few hours of feeling sorry for myself for no reason, I decided to suck it up and go to a friend’s party in downtown LA. He lives in a loft, with a small backyard, and he got a few kiddie pools from Target to celebrate with. It was quite the antitheses of your picture-perfect Memorial Day that you see on TV and I felt very comfortable there.

The moral of the story is that kiddie pools are way more awesome than real pools – and require a lot less maintenance.
